Heather Bowles sits surrounded by her recent commendations from the Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Dept.

We’ve always known Heather Bowles, Asbury~Solomons’ Security Team Captain,  is pretty special.  Now, we’re not the only ones. Recently, Heather received several prestigious awards for her work with the Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department for her work on their emergency services team, including Squad Person of the Year, Top Ten Runner, Top Driver and recognition for heroism during a November school bus accident.

In addition to serving as a driver and emergency medical technician (EMT) for the fire company, Heather also has spent eight terms as treasurer of its Ladies Auxiliary. She began her time with the fire department in 1998, and has been involved in emergency medical services for 14 years.

“This is definitely part of me,” explains Heather. “My father, grandfather and great-grandfather were all Alexandria [Va.] firefighters, and my grandfather and great-grandfather were battalion chiefs. And fire trucks are cool, but I never saw myself running into a burning building, so working for the rescue squad seemed like a good idea to me.”

Heather started out as a driver, unsure that she’d be able to handle “the blood and guts” of medical technician work. However, she soon decided she could and began her EMT training.

As for her work at Asbury~Solomons, Heather is equally committed. “I love my job,” she says. “It’s so great to work with residents as much as I get to in this line of work. They are an amazing generation of people. They’ve endured so much, World War II, some fought in Korea. They’ve been through so many life experiences, yet remain so positive. Really, they’ve become role models for me.”

That's true, Heather. But we think you’re a pretty great role model, too.
